Why Drinking More Water Isn’t Always the Answer
There are lots of recommendations about how much water you should drink in a day—but do you ever feel like it just goes straight through you?
I hear patients say this all the time:
“I drink plenty of water… it just means more bathroom breaks.”
So how much water should you actually be drinking—and more importantly, is your body actually using it?
Hydration isn’t just about how much you drink—it’s about how well your body uses what you do drink.
Is Clear Urine a Good Hydration Goal?
You may have heard that your urine should be almost clear or colorless to indicate proper hydration.
The idea is simple: if you’re drinking enough water, your body will excrete the excess, diluting your urine.
But this doesn’t tell the whole story.
If your body isn’t absorbing the water well, it may simply pass straight through—leaving you functionally dehydrated, even if you’re drinking plenty.
The “Hose vs. Sponge” Hydration Test
Ashley Koff, RD, describes a simple way to think about hydration:
Are you a hose or a sponge?
- A hose lets water run straight through
- A sponge absorbs it and holds onto it
One way to assess this is by noticing how quickly you feel the need to urinate after drinking water.
If it feels like water moves from your mouth to your bladder very quickly, your body may not be absorbing it effectively.
Signs You May Not Be Absorbing Water Well
- Frequent urination (especially very clear urine)
- Feeling thirsty despite drinking regularly
- Fatigue or brain fog
- Headaches
- Feeling “puffy” or bloated
These can all be signs that your body isn’t using the water you’re drinking efficiently.
How to Improve Hydration (Beyond Just Drinking More Water)
1. Sip, Don’t Chug
Drinking smaller amounts throughout the day allows your body to absorb water more effectively than large volumes all at once.
2. Add Electrolytes
Many of us are walking around in a relative electrolyte deficiency—especially with modern diets, stress, and activity levels.
Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium help move water into your cells, where it’s actually needed.
You don’t need to add electrolytes to every drink, but starting your morning with them can make a noticeable difference.
3. Be Mindful of What You’re Drinking
Many commercial electrolyte drinks are high in sugar, which can increase inflammation and make weight loss more difficult.
Look for cleaner options—or keep it simple with a pinch of salt and a balanced diet.
When Water Isn’t Enough: IV Hydration
Sometimes, even when you’re doing everything right, your body needs more direct support.
IV hydration delivers fluids, electrolytes, and vitamins directly into your bloodstream—bypassing the digestive system for faster and more efficient absorption.
Many patients notice improvements in:
- Energy
- Mental clarity
- Overall sense of well-being
This can be especially helpful if you’re:
- Traveling
- Recovering from illness
- Feeling run down
- Not responding to oral hydration
At Imagen Body Sculpting & Cosmetic Center, we offer customized IV hydration therapy in Omaha to help support your body from the inside out.
Listen to Your Body
If you’re thirsty, you’re likely already a bit dehydrated.
Aim to drink regularly throughout the day—and remember, if water doesn’t seem to be working for you, it may not be about drinking more… but absorbing better.

Hydration FAQs
Hydration needs vary based on your body, activity level, and environment. Rather than focusing only on quantity, it’s more important to pay attention to how your body responds and whether you feel truly hydrated.
Not always. While light yellow urine is generally a good sign, consistently clear urine may indicate that water is passing through your system too quickly without being fully absorbed.
Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium help regulate fluid balance and allow water to move into your cells, supporting proper hydration and overall function.
IV hydration may be helpful if you feel persistently dehydrated despite drinking water, or during times of increased stress, travel, illness, or fatigue.
Imagen Body Sculpting & Cosmetic Center offers customized IV hydration therapies in Omaha to support energy, hydration, and overall wellness.
