Frequently Asked Questions About Acne

This common skin condition includes everything from blackheads and whiteheads to blemishes and cysts. Most experience some form of acne on their face or neck during their lifetime, but it is also common to have acne on the chest and back.

There are a few things that cause Acne; One cause is clogged pores. Our pores can be clogged by dead skin cells and oil buildup. The skin can also become inflamed by bacteria, especially when the bacteria is trapped inside a clogged pore. Our hands are a common source of bacteria on the face as are environmental aggressors like smog and cigarette smoke. Using the wrong products for your skin can also lead to acne. Other common causes of acne are hormonal changes and poor diet.

Studies have demonstrated that the hormones in milk and cheese can in-fact lead to acne. For others, a sensitivity to lactose protein leads to inflammation which can present as acne. If you are struggling with consistent acne, consider eliminating dairy for at least a month to see if your skin improves. For a non-dairy source of Calcium and vitamin D, consider taking a multivitamin and substituting with soy or almond milk.

There are several options for treating and preventing acne at Imagen. Our board-certified cosmetic surgeons specialize in facial rejuvenation and can help you with everything from healing active acne with products and chemical peels, to restoring even tone and texture with exfoliating products and laser resurfacing. Skin and acne do not have a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s important to schedule a complementary exam and get the advice of a doctor before attempting to treat your acne. While one product or treatment could work for you, it may be too much for someone with sensitive skin. Similarly, gentle exfoliation could do the trick while another may need deeper resurfacing to resolve their acne issues.

There’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to see improvement after starting your doctor-recommended regimen. It does take some weeks for our skin cells to turnover, so we recommend our patients remain diligent with their prescribed skincare and treatment regimen for at least eight weeks before they re-evaluate.

Accutane is a strong drug that Imagen does not prescribe. Because of the potential risks associated with Accutane, it is generally used as a last resort. The potential side-effects of Accutane are dryness, headache, depression, bad mood and GI complications.
