What is VaserLipo?

VASER liposuction is a surgical procedure for fat-removal that uses ultrasonic vibrations or “vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance” (VASER), separating fat cells and detaching it from the surrounding tissue before it’s vacuumed out through a hollow tube, otherwise known as a cannula.

This type of liposuction can be performed on many different areas of the body including the neck, abdomen, buttock, calves, arms, chest, flanks, back, and hips. Some plastic surgeons prefer to use VaserLipo on Gynecomastia patients to remove unwanted fat and glandular tissue.

All types of liposuction operate similarly. Fat cells are broken apart and then removed from the body using saline solution, and cannulas to suction out the fat deposits under the skin.

When Vaser is used as the first step with traditional liposuction or tumescent lipo or Saline Assisted Lipo it allows for a more gentle liposuction procedure that allows the patient less downtime, less bruising, and swelling in targeted areas.

Vaser is unique because it allows the surgeon to more easily break up excess fat cells precisely which makes it an optimal body contouring procedure.

What is the difference between Vaser Lipo and traditional liposuction?

There are two ways to break apart fat cells – water pressure and lasers. This must be done before you can start the suction and removal of the fat. Vaser is one type of ultrasonic liposuction that harnesses ultrasound energy to break apart fat cells.

Dr. Frank, the only certified Vaser Liposuction surgeon in Nebraska, compares the use of ultrasound energy vs. traditional he says “with traditional lipo, it’s like you are trying to suck an ice cube through a straw, and with the Vaser it blends it into slushy form first.” This improves both body sculpting precision and recovery time.

Procedure and Recovery Time

The Vaser Lipo procedure starts with either general anesthesia where you are fully asleep or local anesthesia with IV sedation which you are very relaxed and sleepy.
After the anesthesia is administered and the patient is comfortable, the plastic surgeon will inject either a saline-anesthetic or tumescent fluid into the areas of the body that are being treated. This mixture increases swelling in the fatty chamber and constricts the small blood vessels to numb the areas of the fatty tissue and decrease bleeding in the treatment area.

The surgeon will then make a small incision on the areas of the body that are being treated and insert a little rubber stopper. The little rubber stopper, also known as a skin port, is used to guide the ultrasound technology via a probe into the fatty tissue.
With a minimally disrupted back and forth motion, the fat deposits are detached from other tissue with ultrasound technology. This in turn makes the withdrawal of the fatty tissue with the cannula much easier than it would be with the traditional liposuction route.

Individual results vary but recovery time for each patient depends on the size of the areas treated. If only a single treatment area was done recovery from swelling or bruising may only take three to five days of recovery time. If a larger area was treated with Vaser Lipo, say a 360 lipo with upper and lower abdomen with flanks recovery time up to two weeks. Compression garments are worn around treated areas after surgery to assist with inflammation and swelling. The compression garments can be easily worn under clothes for four to six weeks after surgery and strenuous activity is prohibited.

Are you a good candidate for Vaser Lipo?

Suitable candidates for lipo often have stubborn fat or problem areas they wish to treat such as love handles or excess areas of fat around the tummy. For optimal final results candidates should lead a healthy lifestyle and have good skin elasticity around the areas of excess fat.
